What are the steps to set the custom white balance on my D40?
In the back of the camera, press "Menu and then use the up / down / left / right in the back of the unit to move the switch to the shooting menu, represented by a small camera in the upper left corner of your screen. Click the camera should be green. Drag the selection to the white balance screen and click OK. The menu offers a quite wide variety of choice, move the switch to the one you want and click OK. You are then given the opportunity to choose the strength of balance changes from -3 to +3. Always to the left to 0
